Last chance: tax return lodgement deadlines and what happens if you miss them
May 14, 2026
As we head into the final quarter of the Australian financial year, it’s time to ensure that you don’t miss lodging your tax return.
The Australian Tax Office (ATO) recently reported that 2 million Australian taxpayers are yet to lodge their 2025 returns. If you’re working with a registered tax agent, the clock is ticking. You have until the 15 May deadline to lodge your return. Miss it, and the consequences can be more than just a slap on the wrist.
Be warned, if you don’t lodge by the deadline, the ATO doesn’t just send a reminder and move on, there are real and escalating consequences.
You may face:
- Failure to Lodge (FTL) penalties, which increase the longer your return remains outstanding (typically applied in increments every 28 days)
- General interest charges (GIC) on any unpaid tax, compounding over time
- Default assessments, where the ATO estimates your income, often resulting in a higher tax bill than what you may actually owe
- Recovery action, which can include payment demands, garnishee notices, or more serious enforcement if left unresolved.
But beyond the financial penalties, the bigger impact is what it does to your business day-to-day.
When tax is hanging over your head:
- Decisions get delayed because you’re unsure what you can afford
- Cash flow tightens as you hold back or scramble to find funds
- Stress increases, not just at tax time, but across everything from payroll to growth plans
- And most importantly you lose clarity, and without clarity, it’s almost impossible to run your business confidently.
What starts as “just a late lodgement” can quickly turn into a cycle of pressure that carries well beyond the deadline.
Unfortunately, this is the reality for many small businesses across our country. Not only are penalties a possibility, but many business owners are also leaving money on the table.
The Australian Taxation Office has consistently highlighted that:
- A significant number of small businesses either overpay tax or miss legitimate deductions
- Billions of dollars in deductions go unclaimed each year due to poor record-keeping or a lack of strategy
- Cash flow pressure is one of the biggest reasons businesses fall behind on tax obligations.
In simple terms, it’s not just about lodging on time, it’s about lodging well. That’s where working with a certified tax agent and accountant, like us, can make all the difference.
So, why do so many small business owners get caught out? It’s rarely about avoidance, it's usually about structure. If tax time is stressful for you year after year, it’s time to change the system.
Many business owners get caught in the trap, treating tax as a once-a-year event, not setting money aside consistently throughout the year. They rely on their bank balance as an indicator as to ‘what’s available’... this is where things start to unravel.
At Northwest Accountancy and Profit First Accounting and Coaching we work with business owners to remove the guesswork, and this is where Profit First becomes a game-changer.
Profit First flips the traditional formula:
Sales – Expenses = Profit
Into something far more practical:
Sales – Profit = Expenses
But more importantly, it introduces a bank account structure that ensures tax is never an afterthought.
With Profit First:
- You allocate tax in real time, every time money comes in
- Your tax obligation is already sitting in a separate account
- Lodgement becomes a formality, not a financial shock
- Cash flow becomes predictable, not reactive.
Instead of scrambling in May, you already know:
- What you owe
- What you’ve set aside
- And what’s actually yours to spend.
Sound like a strategy that you want to implement in your business? You can! It’s not too late, and we are here to help.
It’s time to get organised and lodge before 15th May. By doing so, you will avoid unnecessary penalties, claim everything you are entitled to and start the new financial year with clarity.
Tax time shouldn’t be a surprise, and it definitely should not be a crisis. With the right structure in place, it becomes just another part of running a healthy business.
If you want to move from reactive to proactive, let’s put the right systems in place now.
Northwest Accountancy and Profit First Accounting and Coaching can help you get lodged, get clear, and get set up with a Profit First approach that works year-round. Book a call here.
